Deer Path Branch’s First THRIVE Cancer Wellness Pathway Graduates
River Crossing YMCA hosted a lunch celebration on June 26 for Hunterdon County’s first graduates of the THRIVE Cancer Wellness Pathway program at the Deer Path branch in Flemington. THRIVE is the Y’s free, donor-supported 12-week Pathway program helping cancer survivors regain strength, endurance and well-being through evidence-based wellness support.
“I had cancer, and signed up for the program when it came here (Flemington),” shared Cheryl Frustieri. “I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but it is scary to have cancer, so to be around other women who had breast cancer gave me a sense of community and comfort so I needn’t feel so alone.”
Participants of the THRIVE Cancer Wellness Pathway program build back muscle mass and strength, increased flexibility and cardiovascular endurance to improve overall health and sense of wellness. Participants receive a free 12-week family membership to the branch for the duration of the program.
“I had just concluded treatment and was looking for a place to continue improving my health,” explained Fern McInerney. “I called and signed up for THRIVE, not really knowing what to expect. Lisa [the instructor] was so motivating and inspirational, it was easy to commit to the 12 weeks.”
River Crossing YMCA has opened registration for fall Pathway Wellness programs at the Deer Path branch, including a new THRIVE Cancer Wellness session. THRIVE, the Healthy Lifestyles Pathway program and the military Veterans Wellness Pathway program begin Sept. 22, but registration closes on Sept. 15. All YMCA Pathway wellness programs are open and free to the community. Pathway program instructors are certified wellness coaches with training in curriculum specialized for each program. Participants need not be members of the Y to enroll, and are invited to inquire on the Y’s Community Impact & Pathway Programs webpage.
